Course Description

Microsoft Press has just released the latest book from Patrick Tisseghem and Lars Fastrup: “Inside the Index and Search Engines: Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007”, ISBN 9780735625358.

Prerequisites

Students should have a good knowledge of MOSS 2007.

Things you will learn

Search Administration

There are many tasks involved when it comes to search administration. You’ll learn in this module how to create and configure content sources, search scopes, crawl rules, managed properties, the ranking and the search service itself.

The Search Administration Object Model

This module provides a brief overview of the options for automating the administration tasks: building STSADM extensions, Powershell Commandlets or mainstream SharePoint solution components such as application pages.

Customizing the End-User Search Experience

Both administrators and developers have options for the customization of the end-user search experience. In this module we’ll cover the configuration of the Search Web Parts, the Search Center and the XSL that is used to render the search results.

Search Usage Reporting

We’ll also cover how to build, deploy and administer custom security trimmers for the business data.

The Search APIs

This module is a developer-oriented module covering the Query object model and the Query Web Service. Both can be used to programmatically execute both a keyword syntax and a SQL syntax. We’ll build custom search Web Parts, build Features that deliver new search options for the user such as a new small Search Box.

Faceted Search and Microsoft Search Server 2008

A final module provides an overview of your options to deliver, configure and customize faceted search as well as what Microsoft Search Server 2008 has as features, including the new administration bar and the support for federated search.
