This 2-day workshop, conducted by Patrick Tisseghem, targets both developer and administrators who have the task within an organization to customize and configure the MOSS 2007 indexing and search services. The agenda combines administration modules for the optimal configuration of the search infrastructure, tips and tricks for an optimized end-user search experience, and the options for the developers to customize the out-of-the-box end-user search experience, build extensions for it or replace the experience with custom search solution components.

This workshop is targeted to SharePoint 2007 developers and administrators
who want to study the MOSS 2007 indexing and search services.

Things you will learn
Introduction to the Enterprise Search
A first module takes a closer look at the indexing and search
architecture discussing the various building blocks, the search
topology, the role of the Shared Services Provider, and a summary of the
typical tasks assigned to administrators and developers.
The End-User Search Experience
Both WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 deliver a good end-user search experience.
This module covers all the various user interface elements and provides
tips and tricks to execute a search query in the most optimal way.
Included is a closer look at the keyword syntax.
Search Administration
There are many tasks involved when it comes to search administration.
You’ll learn in this module how to create and configure content sources,
search scopes, crawl rules, managed properties, the ranking and the
search service itself.
The Search Administration Object Model
This module provides a brief overview of the options for automating
the administration tasks: building STSADM extensions, Powershell
Commandlets or mainstream SharePoint solution components such as
application pages.
Customizing the End-User Search Experience
Both administrators and developers have options for the customization
of the end-user search experience. In this module we’ll cover the
configuration of the Search Web Parts, the Search Center and the XSL
that is used to render the search results.
Search Usage Reporting
In this module, you’ll get an overview of the architecture that is
available for search usage reporting, the configuration and
administration of it and the options for processing the data in order to
optimize the end-user search experience and the crawling for the data.
Searching Business Data
The Business Data Catalog is a possible content source with MOSS
2007. This module covers the steps to crawl business data and configure
the search results for an optimized rendering of the business data.
We’ll also cover how to build, deploy and administer custom security
trimmers for the business data.
The Search APIs
This module is a developer-oriented module covering the Query object
model and the Query Web Service. Both can be used to programmatically
execute both a keyword syntax and a SQL syntax. We’ll build custom
search Web Parts, build Features that deliver new search options for the
user such as a new small Search Box.
Faceted Search and Microsoft Search Server 2008
A final module provides an overview of your options to deliver,
configure and customize faceted search as well as what Microsoft Search
Server 2008 has as features, including the new administration bar and
the support for federated search.
